CARDINALS MOVE TO 5-0 WITH CONVINCING SWEEP OF FROGS…
Chris Beyeler and his offense completely dismantled the Sissach Frogs in game one Sunday, 22-2. Chris took a no-hitter into the 6th inning, he lost the no hit bid, and the shutout, but keeps his record perfect at 3-0. Offensively the Cards sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning, and from there, never looked back. In the inning they scored eight times, on five hits, with the help of five walks. Johnny Perigos hit his and his team’s first homer of the year to stake the home team to an early lead. On the way to the six inning mercy rule, the Cardinals would score in all five innings they hit, and racked up 14 hits. Although they were helped by several walks, the team broke out of its’ early season slump offensively. Offensive leaders: Vitus Huber: 2-2, 4 walks; Tobias Imboden: 2-3, 4 runs; Miseal Guerrero: 2-3, 4 RBI. Chris Beyeler: 3-0, 4 K’s, 4 hits allowed.
In game two, Tobias Imboden took the hill for his first start of the season for the Cardinals. Imboden would leave the Frogs with no chance in securing the first shutout of his young pitching career, 7-0. Tobias struck out eight batters, while allowing only 5 hits in the complete game victory. The Cardinals found things a bit more difficult against Frogs started Danny Traina, but still knocked out ten hits in the game. John Baum: 2-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 runs; and Johnny Perigos: 2-3, HR, 3 RBI led the charge. Klee: 2-3, was the only Frog with a multi hit game on the day.
The Cardinals travel to Lausanne Sunday to take on the Indians in a rematch of last season’s final series. The Cards as always would like to thank the people who came out to the Allmend.
INDIANS KEEP BARRACUDAS WINLESS… 9-6 AND 6-2
Last year’s finalist, the Lausanne Indians have helped to extend the winless start for last season’s semi-finalist, the Zurich Barracudas to four straight to start the year. Indians starter, Nicolas Jaquemet, gutted out another win on the mound, moving his teams winning streak to four games, and an overall record of 4-1. The game featured three long balls, and was a back and forth affair. The ‘Cudas took an early 1-0, and 2-1 advantage, only to see the Indians climb back to even. In the sixth, ‘Cuda starting pitcher Nderim Coma drove a ball out of the yard for a one run lead. In the seventh, Kyle Patrick extended that lead with a shot of his own, good for three runs, and a four run lead. However, as was the case early, the Indians had an answer as Marte Torres cut into the lead with a big homerun to right to make the score 6-4. Jaquemet would buckle down from here, and keep the ‘Cudas off the scoreboard, as his team would mount the comeback. In the eighth inning, Frank Berchtold relieved Coma, and ran into trouble, as the bases would be loaded with one out. The Indians top hitter, Ivan Jimenez would quickly unload them with a three-run triple, giving the Indians a lead they would hold onto, ending the game at 9-6.
In game two, Beni Montag and Jack Portaz would have an all out pitchers duel. Montag would go deep into the game and allowing only one run to the powerful Indians lineup. Portaz would one up Montag, and the ‘Cudas, throwing a complete game two hitter, while allowing only one earned run. The Indians eventually broke through against American Kyle Patrick for four runs, and the win. Once again the big hit coming off the bat of Jimenez, as another triple would prove to be the difference.
RAINBOWS EVEN RECORD AFTER SWEEP OF WINLESS EAGLES
Roger Salvodelli threw a complete game nine hitter, allowing only two earned runs, while striking out five. Stefan Haltmeier took the loss for the Reussbuehl Eagles. The ‘Bows were sloppy defensively, but eventually got their first win of ’09, 11-6.
Josh Crouse was the story of game two, as he would toss a complete game, one-hitter to help his team secure the sweep by a score of 3-2. There would be only six hits in the game, as the pitching would dominate. DelaRosa went the distance for the Eagles, striking out four, keeping his team in there with a chance to win it until the end.
The wins even the ‘Bows record at 2-2, as the Eagles remain winless at 0-4.
FLYERS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH CHALLENGERS
Recap by Sam Faeder
The Therwil Flyers (3-1) split a doubleheader with the Zurich Challengers (3-1), in a possible early season playoff preview between two of the top clubs from 2008.
The Flyers jumped ahead early in game one, with six of the first seven batters ripping base hits to put up five runs in the first frame. Still learning how to operate in cruise control, the Flyers let the Challengers back into the game to the tune of six walks and five errors. Leaving the doors wide open, the Flyers saw their early lead completely erased as the Challengers jumped ahead 8-6 in the 5th.
Fighting back, Therwil tacked on a run in the 5th and three in the 6th, the later runs scoring on a key two-out, two-base, two-run, error by the Challengers left fielder Martinez and a clutch two out hit from veteran Stefan Koller. The 10-8 lead was short lived though, as a couple of extra base hits by Siegrid and Landis at the heart of the Zurich lineup chased Flyers’ Starter Koller (1-0) in the 7th. With one out and the go-ahead run in scoring position, young Flyers righty Lukas Croton (1-0, 1 save) came in from the bullpen and slammed the door, striking out Martinez and inducing a pop out to end the Challenger rally with the score locked at 10-10.
In the bottom half, a walk to Carlos “Los” Brito, a single from Chris Blackbee, and a key bunt from Matthias “Matti” Jung left young right fielder Hide Oshima at the plate with two outs and two runners in scoring position. Oshima ripped a laser into right center to score the go-ahead runs, and the Flyers never looked back.
The beginning of game two told a different story, as a flat Flyer defense left starter Oshima (0-1) out on his own. Falling behind 8-0, the Flyers bats were silenced by Challenger starter James Sanders until the 6th inning. Therwil fought hard in the last two innings and tacked on four runs, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the eight run deficit.
