Recaps South: Matt Vance hits 4 Homeruns as Regensburg stays undefeated

Posted on April 27, 2010 by philipp

Mainz Athletics – Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg 7-9, 2-13 (8)

Matt Vance hit four homeruns in two games to make sure the Buchbinder Legionaere would stay undefeated after their trip to Mainz. In game one Regensburg took an early 5-1 lead through four innings, as Vance homered in each of his first two at-bats. The Athletics tried to come back and cut the deficit to 5-6 after seven innings, but three Legionaere runs in the ninth sealed the win for the guests, even though Mike Larson had the last word for Mainz with his second two-run homerun in the game.

In the second match Regensburg produced 13 runs on twelve hits and a whopping nine errors by the A’s defense en route to a 13-2 win in eight innings. Vance reached in five of his six plate appearances, highlighted by two solo homeruns. He is the first batter in the Baseball-Bundesliga to hit four homeruns in a twin bill since Heidenheim’s Simon Guehring did it in 2006 against the Fuerth Pirates. Chris Howard added a two-run homerun.

Saarlouis Hornets – Mannheim Tornados 4-9, 5-15 (7)

The Tornados have reached the .500 mark with a sweep in Saarlouis. In game one Mannheim erased an early 0-2 deficit to take a 4-2 lead in the fifth on its way to a 9-4 win. Rene Franke went the distance to take the win, while his battery mate Lukas Egetmeyer went 3-for-3. Mike Heaney had three hits in four at-bats for the Hornets. In the second game Matthias Schmitt went 5-for-5 with two triples to lead the Tornados to a 15-5 win in seven innings.

Neuenburg Atomics – Haar Disciples 1-13 (7), 1-6

Before entering the tough stretch of their schedule the Disciples collected two wins from the Atomics to solidify third place in the southern division standings. In game one they scored ten runs in the fourth en route to a seven-inning 13-1 win. Ty Eriksen led the way by going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and five RBI. Dominic Maric and Gregor Piehler had big two-run hits during the rally in which eight of the nine players in the starting lineup crossed the plate. Ted Gieschen allowed just three hits, a run and a walk in seven innings for the win. In the second game Haar broke a 1-1 tie by scoring five runs in the ninth, profiting from three errors by the Neuenburg defense in this frame. Calvin Brutus (W 3-0) and Alex Aucoin (L 0-4) went the distance.

Gauting Indians – Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 3-10, 3-6 (11)

Even without the missing Simon Guehring (personal reasons) the Heidekoepfe improved to 6-2 for the season with a pair of wins in Gauting. In game one they took an early 5-0 lead midway through the third inning on their way to a 10-3 win. Peter Dankerl delivered the hitting highlight with a two-run homerun in the eighth. Markus Winkler won the duel on the mound against John Dobkowski.

The second part of the Sunday doubleheader was much different. After Heidenheim had taken a 2-0 lead in the seventh, but the Indians countered with a three-run double by Matti Emery in the eighth. But it was not enough, as the Heidekoepfe tied the game in the ninth and won it in the eleventh. Dankerl, Chris Beck and Hagen Raetz had five hits each on the day.
