Recaps North: Solingen, Bonn and Paderborn remain undefeated

News - German Baseball Leagues Comments Off on Recaps North: Solingen, Bonn and Paderborn remain undefeated

Solingen Alligators defeat Cologne Cardinals twice

HSV Stealers – Dohren Wild Farmers 9-5, 1-4

The promoted Wild Farmers collected their first win of the season, when they won game two of their doubleheader in Hamburg on Saturday. They scored three early runs in the first two frames against Joakim Claesson (L 1-1) to take an early 3-0 lead on their way to a 4-1 win. Vince DeCoito (W 1-0) held the Stealers offense in check for his first win in the Baseball-Bundesliga.

The HSV prevailed 9-5 in the first game of the day. A four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth broke a 3-3 tie and put the Stealers ahead for good, highlighted by Patrick Maat’s first homerun in Germany and a two-run single by Philipp von Soosten. Daniel Harms (W 1-0) picked up the win. Thies Brunckhorst (L 0-2) took the loss.

Solingen Alligators – Cologne Cardinals 5-0, 9-2

Andre Hughes (W 2-0) pitched seven scoreless to lead the Alligators to a 5-0 shutout in game one of their twin bill against the Cardinals. Solingen scored the first three runs in the second with a little help from the Cologne defense before a RBI single by Robin Drache and a sac fly by Dustin Hughes sealed the deal in the seventh. Pascal Raab (L 0-1) was charged with the loss.

In game two last year’s northern champion celebrated an easy 9-2 victory. Dustin Hughes provided the early 1-0 lead with a solo homerun and later added a two-run triple. Robin Drache had a two-run double. Josh Rickards (W 2-0) received the win, Kevin Brunet (L 0-2) the loss.

Bonn Capitals – Pulheim Gophers 5-0, 2-1

German national team pitcher Tim Henkenjohann (W 2-0) is already in mid-season form. After racking up 19 Ks last week in Dohren, the right-hander struck out 17 batters against the Gophers on Sunday to lead Bonn to a 5-0 shutout. Only two players from Pulheim reached third base in the game. Markus Solbach (L 0-2) took the loss, his second of the season.

The Capitals needed two late runs to win game two by a score of 2-1. Pulheim broke a scoreless tie in the seventh, when they scored after a leadoff double and the following RBI single. But Bonn evened the contest in the eighth and won it on a walk-off RBI single by Jon Marshall in the bottom of the ninth. Bryce Schoening (W 1-0) got the win. Lee Roberts (L 0-2) took the loss.

Paderborn Untouchables – Dortmund Wanderers 15-5, 6-4

The Untouchables didn’t waste any time in game one of their two-game set against the Wanderers, taking an early 9-0 lead after three innings en route to an eight-inning 15-5 win. Julius Uelschen scored four runs. Nik Kosach drove in three. Jendrick Speer collected two runs and a two-run single, which capped the ten-run rule shortened game. Andre Heller had a two-run double for Dortmund. Eugen Heilmann (W 2-0) pitched 6 1/3 innings for the win. Marco Dietsch (L 0-1) took the loss.

In the second game Paderborn built up a 6-0 lead through four innings, highlighted by five runs in the second. The Wanderers tried to come back, ended the shutout bid in the fifth and cut the deficit to two runs in the eighth, but in the end had to settle for a 4-6 loss and the sweep. Sascha Brockmeyer had a pair of RBI doubles for the U’s. Daniel Meier (W 2-0) won the duel of American starters against Matt Kemp (L 0-2).
