SUPERFUND Wanderers Vienna – Dornbirn Indians 21-3, 13-3
The SUPERFUND WANDERERS opened the 2009 season in the Austrian Baseball League with a sweep. In game one against the INDIANS they scored a whopping ten runs in the first inning en route to a 21-3 win. Hiro Sakanashi hit a solo homerun and scored three times. Christian Tomsich went three-for-four with two runs scored and four RBI. Max Scholdan also drove in four. Emilio Podreka and Benjamin Husty combined to score seven runs. Johannes Pernkopf (W 1-0) picked up the win with five innings, allowing five hits, three runs (2 ER) and five bb. Holger Neyer (L 0-1) was charged with 15 runs (11 ER) on 13 hits and one walk in just 1 2/3 innings.
In the second game VIENNA also got off to a perfect start, scoring five runs in the opening frame in a 13-3 rout. Emilio Podreka had two hits, two runs and five RBI this time around. Nick DeForest crossed the plate four times. Christian Tomsich (W 1-0) received the win for four innings of no-hit relief. Brandon Downs (L 0-1) Austria debut wasn’t successful, as he gave up eleven runs (7 ER) on five hits and seven walks in six innings.
Vienna Metrostars – Tigers Schwaz 7-1, 7-6
The METROSTARS matched the opening day sweep of their local rivals WANDERERS one day later. They defeated the TIGERS 7-1 in game one. Philipp Brenner doubled and drove in two. Dominik Loeffler scored twice. Jakob Simonsen (W 1-0) received the win, allowing one run on five hits and a walk in five innings. Paul Astl (L 0-1) took the loss, giving up ten hits, seven runs (5 ER) and three bb in 6 2/3 innings.
In the second match the METS needed to overcome 0-4 and 2-6 deficits to win 7-6 against SCHWAZ. Benjamin Salzmann delivered the game-winner with a two-run single. He drove in a total of three runs. Dominik Loeffler once again scored two runs. Franz Haisjackl had two hits, a run and two RBI for the TIGERS. Philipp Lipiarski started for VIENNA and allowed three hits, four unearned runs and three walks in 3 2/3 innings. Hubert Weiser Jr. picked up the win. Michael Nagamatsu began for SCHWAZ and conceded seven hits and four runs (2 ER) in six innings, striking out six. Nick Zambrotta took the loss in relief.
Schwechat Blue Bats – MOSQUITO Athletics Attnang-Puchheim 7-11, 5-3
The defending Austrian champion had to settle for a split in the openers against the BLUE BATS. In game one the A’s won a slugfest 11-7 behind a homerun by David Burns and three runs each by Arian Quirantes (2-4, 2 RBI) and Horst Efferdinger. Domingo Severino and Victor Torres homered for SCHWECHAT. The two combined to drive in all seven runs for the promoted team. Walter Strasser (W 1-0) received the win, allowing five hits, four runs and six bb in seven innings. He struck out 13. Christof Benedict gave up six runs (3 ER) on seven hits and seven walks in 6 1/3 innings, taking the loss.
Richard Riesenberger (W 1-0) struck out eleven in a complete game to lead the BATS to a 5-3 win in game two. He allowed three runs (1 ER) on seven hits and two walks. Victor Torres and Wolfgang Pleischl drove in two runs apiece to head the offense. Markus Efferdinger went three-for-four with a double, a run scored and a RBI for the A’s. Thomas Schrittwieser (L 0-1) started and gave up six hits, two runs (1 ER) and four walks in five innings.
Diving Ducks Vienna – Union Kufstein Vikings 5-14, 6-3
The DIVING DUCKS are back in the ABL and celebrated a split in the opener against KUFSTEIN. In game one the VIKINGS crushed the newcomer with a 14-5 victory. Koichi Hida and Marco Einwallwer drove in five of the 14 runs. Five players scored twice. Eleven players reached base at least once. Werner Harrasser (W 1-0) had eight punch-outs in a complete game win, allowing five hits, five runs (1 ER) and two walks. Clemens Seiser (L 0-1) surrendered twelve runs (7 ER) on six hits and six bb in 6 2/3 innings.
In the second match VIENNA won 6-3 behind a nice outing of starter Jason Wall (W 1-0). He struck out eleven in eight innings, conceding three runs (2 ER) on five hits and three bb. Six different DUCKS crossed the plate for runs. Julio Diaz reached base three times. Koichi Hida drove in two of the three VIKINGS runs. Thomas Krimbacher (L 0-1) took the loss, allowing two hits, three runs (2 ER) and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.
