Germany concluded the preliminary round at the World Baseball Challenge with a 2-3 record after losing their last game 3-9 against Canada. The maple leafs scored eight of their nine runs between the second and fourth and decided the outcome early. Junior Nicholls drove in three, while the first three batters in the starting lineup each scored twice. Simon Guehring put Germany on the board in the sixth with a two-run single. One frame later Octavio Medina plated Ludwig Glaser with a single.
Matt Bannister (W 1-0) allowed three hits, two runs and three walks in six innings. He struck out five. Martin Almstetter (L 0-1) began for the team of Greg Frady and conceded five hits, four runs and two bb in 2 1/3 innings. His club teammate from Regensburg followed him on the mound, but wasn’t able to stop the offense Canada’s either. Martin Dewald and Max Boldt closed it out with solid relief appearances.
Germany has an off day on Thursday and takes the field again on Friday, when the playoffs begin. Starters Enorbel Marquez-Ramirez, Andre Hughes and Tim Henkenjohann all are available for the final round. In other games on Wednesday, British Columbia crushed the Bahamas 20-4 and Team USA beat the local Prince George Axemen.
