Germany defeated British Columbia 8-1 on Saturday morning in Prince George, Canada at the World Baseball Challenge to reach the semi-finals later that day against Canada. After both teams exchanged single runs in the first three frames, Germany took a 3-1 lead after RBIs by Andy Janzen and Jendrick Speer in the fourth and fifth. A three-run homerun by Chris Howard in the eighth and two more runs in the ninth blew the game wide open at the end.
Tim Henkenjohann, who had beaten Team USA earlier this week, gave up just one run on three hits and six walks in 6 1/3 innings, striking out five. Martin Dewald closed it out with 2 1/3 scoreless frames. Jesse Peters (L 0-1) struck out eight in 7 2/3 innings, but didn’t get much help from his defense, which committed five errors in the game. He conceded seven hits, six runs (2 ER) and a bb.
British Columbia defeated Germany 12-3 during the preliminary phase, but couldn’t repeat that offensive performance on Saturday. They finish the World Baseball Challenge in fourth place in the final standings.
