Germany lost game number four at the World Baseball Challenge 3-12 against British Columbia on Tuesday and is now 2-2 with one game to go in the preliminary round. The Canadian selection hit German pitching hard from the start, took a fast 4-0 lead in the second and blew the game wide open in the eighth with a five-run rally. Rob Recuenco (4-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Mike Collins (3 RBI) and Mike Styrna (3 RBI) hit homeruns for BC.
The lone European squad in the competition put their first two runs on the board in the sixth on a two-run shot by Simon Guehring. One frame later they added another run, when Sascha Lutz plated Chris Howard with a groundball to the first baseman, who made the error. They had the bases loaded with no outs, but Jendrick Speer grounded into a 1-2-3 double play and Dominik Wulf flied out to end the threat.
J Alexander (W 1-0) allowed just four hits, two runs and a walk in six innings to earn the win. He struck out five. Rene Franke (L 0-1) got the starting nod from head coach Greg Frady for Germany, but couldn’t stop the offense by BC. He conceded eight hits, five runs (4 ER) and two bb in 4 1/3 innings, striking out one. Markus Winkler and Nils Hartkopf followed, but combined to give up seven more runs on eight hits and seven walks.
In the second game at the WBC in Prince George on Tuesday, Team USA beat the Bahamas 8-1 and improved to 2-1 in the tournament. On Wednesday three games are scheduled with Germany facing Canada in their last first-round match. The second round starts on Friday.
