Pan Am Qualifier 2010: Results October 8



Although rain caused a few delays all four scheduled games on the first day of the second round at the Pan Am/Baseball World Cup Qualifier 2010 in Puerto Rico could be played on Friday. The Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Cuba and the USA each celebrated a win to improve their chances for the semi-finals.

Team USA shut out Nicaragua 5-0 thanks to another solid start by Todd Redmond. He allowed just four hits and a walk in seven scoreless innings, striking out six. At the plate Cord Phelps and Eric Hosmer collected two hits apiece with Phelps crossing the plate twice. Armando Hernandez issued three hits, four runs (2 ER) and three bb in 7 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Cuba also stayed undefeated in the tournament, defeating Panama 7-1. Yulieski Gourriel went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI to lead the offense. Hector Olivera picked up three hits. Norge Luis Vera gave up one run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings for the win. He struck out six. Isaias Velasquez and Concepcion Rodriguez each had three hits for Panama.

Venezuela beat host Puerto Rico 7-2 after breaking a 2-2 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. A three-run bases clearing triple by Javier Colina in the bottom of the eighth sealed the victory. Dirimo Chavez, Wuilliams Vasquez and Ronald Acuna crossed the plate twice. Ivan Blancoescalona received the win after 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Mario Santiago conceded three runs (2 ER) on two hits in 5 1/3 innings for the loss.

The Dominican Republic scored four runs in the first four innings en route to a 5-2 victory against Canada. Mario Alvarez issued just an unearned run on three hits and a walk in six strong innings for the win. He struck out nine. Ricardo Nanita drove in two. Jamie Romak homered for the maple leafs. Nick Bucci was charged with loss, allowing five hits, three runs (2 ER) and three bb in three frames.
