North: Showdown between Solingen and Paderborn ends with Split

Posted on May 6, 2009 by philipp

Solingen vs. Paderborn, Baseball, Bundesliga, Germany

Solingen Alligators – Paderborn Untouchables 9-2, 4-5

The highly anticipated duel between the two leaders in the northern division of the Baseball-Bundesliga in Germany ended with a split. In game one Matthew Pali debuted with three hits, including a homer and five RBI to lead the ALLIGATORS to a 9-2 victory. Enorbel Marquez-Ramirez pitched eight innings for the win. Moritz Buttgereit scored three times. In the second match PADERBORN scored four runs in the first three frames and barely stopped a late rally by SOLINGEN to win 5-4 and to end the winning streak of last year’s north champion. The game ended when Chris Beck was thrown out at the plate, trying to score on a short fly ball.

Bonn Capitals – Dortmund Wanderers 2-5, 0-2

An injury-depleted CAPITALS team had no chance against the WANDERERS, losing both ends of the doubleheader. In game one Dimitar Nassapov led DORTMUND to a 5-2 win. In the second match pitchers Michael Kaber, Matt Kemp and Rene Herlitzius combined to throw a one-hitter for a 2-0 win by the WANDERERS. Trevor Howell first scored a run and later drove in the second.

Cologne Cardinals – HSV Stealers 2-4, 5-2

In a duel for fourth place in the northern division standings, both won one game. In the first part of the twin bill, the HSV profited from four (!) hit batters and a single in the ninth to score the decisive runs in a 4-2 victory. COLOGNE had tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a sac fly. A few hours later, the CARDINALS scored three runs in the first en route to a 5-2 victory. Kalev Betancourt gave up just three hits, two runs and a walk in eight innings for the win.

Bonn Capitals – Pulheim Gophers 10-11, 15-4

The two teams at the bottom of the standings in the north, BONN and PULHEIM settled for a split on Sunday. The GOPHERS started the first part of the twin bill by scoring three runs on their way to an 11-10 victory. The CAPITALS had a runner in scoring position in the ninth, but failed to bring him in. In the second match CAPS head coach Matthias Winterrath gave the starting nod again to national team hurler Tim Henkenjohann, who had pitched a complete game just two days earlier. Hopefully this isn’t coming back to haunt Henkenjohann later this year. BONN scored 15 runs on nine hits and won by a score of 15-4.
