The Netherlands confirmed their favorite status and claimed the title at the European Softball Championship in Prague, Czech Republic. The Dutch team defeated Italy 3-0 in the Gold Medal Game on Saturday afternoon. Lindsey Meadows issued just five hits and two walks in seven scoreless innings to path the way. Saskia Kosterink scored two of the three runs in the game.
Italy had reached the finals with a 10-1 victory in five innings over the Czech Republic earlier on the day. On Friday the Netherlands had advanced to the championship game with a 7-3 win over Italy. The Czech team beat out Russia 8-3 to pick up Bronze. The big surprise of the event was the sixth-place finish for Austria. Dinet Oosting (NED) was named Most Valuable Player following the conclusion of the one-week long tournament. Tereza Jakesova (CZE) was the best batter, Sarah Benchali (FRA) the best pitcher.
