Netherlands start with Loss into St. Petersburg International Baseball

The St. Petersburg International Baseball, an international spring training tournament in Florida, began a few days ago. On Tuesday the Dutch National Team entered the competition with a 1-6 loss to the Korean professional team of the Seoul Nexen Heroes. It was already the fifth match for Seoul at the Al Lang Field in St. Petersburg.

New manager Brian Farley sent Diegomar Markwell (2 IP), David Bergman (2 IP), Kevin Heijstek (2 IP), Jurjen van Zijl (1 IP) and Orlando Yntema (2 IP) to the mound in the afternoon affair. On offense Danny Rombley, Bryan Engelhardt, Dirk van’t Klooster, Rien Vernooij and Bas Nooij picked up the hits for the Netherlands. Van’t Klooster drove in Engelhardt for the lone Dutch run in the second.

Both teams will meet again on Thursday evening. Afterwards the Netherlands has dates with the Canadian Junior National Team, the Tampa Bay Rays, St. Petersburg College and the Philadelphia Phillies.
