Alike the October 2011 prize and the 2011 Year prize after clinching IBAF World Cup in Panama, the Netherlands baseball team once more won the March 2013 prize for the best general sports result by Netherlands sports man and women. This time the third place in final ranking of World Baseball Classic 2013 was considered by 44 per cent of the voters as the best Sport Moment of the month.
According to organizing newspaper De Telegraaf, it is remarkable that the “not winning” baseball team beat the gold medals winning speed skaters in World Championships. Speed skating has been very popular in the Netherlands since over a century and have reached live TV reporting since the seventies. In March four Dutch speed skating idols came home with fresh world titles: Ireen Wust (women) and Sven Kramer, Jorrit Bergsma and Jan Smeekens.
Technical director baseball Robert Eenhoorn was quoted by De Telegraaf: “This voting result confirms that more and more people follow our baseball. The World Baseball Classic effect is stunning. Even more than in 2011, the general sport public has recognized now that our baseball belongs to the world top. Finishing among the best professional baseball players made a really deep impression.”
