Six nations from Asia advance to Tokyo 2020 Olympic softball qualifier

Six Asian nations have been confirmed entry into the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Asia/Oceania Softball 2019 qualifier for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020, following today’s closing of the Softball Asia Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The top three finishers in Asia — Japan, China and Chinese Taipei — are also the first national teams qualified for the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup in 2021.

“Congratulations to the qualified teams for the flagship Softball World Cup and the Asia/Oceania qualification event for Tokyo 2020,” said WBSC Softball Chairman Tommy Velazquez. “It’s the highest honour in our sport, representing your country and playing on the world stage against the best in the game. This spirit captures the driving force behind WBSC’s continuous efforts to develop our sport globally.”

The top six teams of the Asian championship (excluding Japan) also qualified for the Asia/Oceania Softball qualifier for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020, which will be held from 24-29 September in Shanghai, China.

Host China, Chinese Taipei, Philippines, Korea, Indonesia and Hong Kong, along with Australia and New Zealand, will battle in Shanghai for an Olympic berth and chance for gold in Tokyo.

Road to Softball World Cup 2021

Asia Champion Japan and 2nd Place China secured their presence in the Softball World Cup by advancing to the Finals of the Softball Asia Cup, while Chinese Taipei defeated the Philippines today in the bronze medal match to claim Asia’s third and final World Cup berth.

In the Asia final, Japan defeated China, 9-2, with two-time Olympic Medalist Eri Yamada named tournament MVP.
