Vojtech Mensik and his North Carolina State Wolfpack are bound for Omaha and the 2021 NCAA Division I College World Series. Mensik, a native of Brno, Czech Republic and a member of the Czech national team, helped the No. 12-ranked Wolfpack upset top-ranked University of Arkansas Razorbacks in its best-of-three-Super Regional series in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The Razorbacks, who entered the series with a 49-11 record, took Game One on June 11 in commanding fashion, winning 21-2, but the Wolfpack responded with back-to-back, one-run wins for the right to compete for the NCAA Division I title.
Mensik played an important role in the 6-5 victory in Game Two on June 12, going 2-for-4, including a solo homer. He added a double in the rubber game on June 13, which was decided in North Carolina State’s favor after the team broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth.
The Wolfpack will now face Vanderbilt University, the University of Arizona, and Stanford University in double-elimination group play, with the Stanford and North Carolina State match-up counting as the first game of the 2021 College World Series. First pitch is scheduled for 20:00 (CEST) on Saturday, June 19.
The winner of North Carolina State’s group will proceed to face either the University of Texas, the University of Tennessee, the University of Virginia, or Mississippi State University in the best-of-three championship series, with Game One scheduled for Monday, June 28.
A sophomore, Mensik has started all 53 Wolfpack games this season. He is hitting .237/.306/.358 with five home runs. He also has 10 steals, good enough for fourth on the team.
