The 2014 DBV Convention is taking place from January 24 to 26 at the Ahorn Sportpark in Paderborn, Germany. Registration for the baseball and softball clinics as well as the umpire and scoring training is open through convention.baseball-softball.de. Mister-Baseball.com is going to introduce the speakers in the coming days.
One of the speakers is going to be former MLB Umpire Larry Young. His focus at the DBV Convention in January obviously is on the umpire training.
Following graduating from college (BA of education) Young worked as an umpire in the Minor Leagues until being promoted to Major League Baseball in 1985. He stayed in the big leagues for 23 years and was considered one of the best umpires in the game. He was called to work the World Series in 1996 and 2003, All Star Games in 1991 and 2003, as well as six Division Series and three League Championship Series.
Young stayed in the game after retiring from his active career. He is currently one of the MLB Umpire Supervisors and a consultant for the playing rules committee. He also is part of the IBAF Umpire Commission and was in charge of selecting the umpires for the World Baseball Classic including the Qualifiers. Additionally he has a high reputation as umpire instructor. This summer he went to Barcelona, Spain for the IBAF Umpire Camp.
Little tidbit from his career: During an umpire lockout in 1995 Young was a special guest referee at WrestleMania XI at the match between The Undertaker and King Kong Bundy.
