Martis, Jurrjens get defeated by AL East Teams

Posted on June 28, 2009 by philipp

On Saturday Shairon Martis (L 5-3) started for the Nationals against the Orioles. He allowed six hits, four runs and three walks in five innings. All four runs came around on two swings. Gregg Zaun took him deep with a solo shot in the second. Nolan Reimold followed with a three-run homerun in the fifth. The Washington offense wasn’t able match the production of Baltimore and they lost 3-6. They loaded the bases twice with no outs, but only were able to put two runs combined on the board in these situations. Martis’ ERA climbed to 5.25.

Already on Friday Jair Jurrjens (L 5-6) lost a pitcher’s duel against Boston’s Josh Beckett. He pitched eight innings and gave up four runs (3 ER) on seven hits and three bb. He struck out six. One of the runs was a solo shot by David Ortiz in the fifth. The Red Sox won by a final score of 4-1. It was the fifth start in June for Jurrjens, but he remained winless despite having an ERA of 3.68 in these outings. His ERA for the whole season stands at 2.93 in 16 games.
