After the conclusion of the Italian Baseball Week, where Italy won all five of their games, manager Marco Mazzieri announced that pitchers Sandy Patrone and Valerio Simone, infielder Giovanni Pantaleoni and outfielder Anthony Coromato will not make the final roster for the upcoming European Championship in Germany. Especially Patrone is a surprise cut. He had a 6-3 record and an ERA of 1.99 in 14 starts during the regular season in the Italian Baseball League, starting game three each week for Telemarket Rimini. Italy opens the tournament on Friday afternoon in Stuttgart against Spain.
