The Spanish National Team pitcher Manuel Tabare Olivera will strengthen the pitching staff of the FC BARCELONA. The 30-year-old southpaw returns to Spain after several years in the United States.
The journeyman went to the Southwest Texas State University in 2001. Afterwards he played for Independent League teams like the RENO ASTROS or the ALEXANDRIA ACES and pitched in Europe for BARCELONA and ADO (Netherlands).
In 2005 he signed with the FLORIDA MARLINS organization and stayed in their system until last year, reaching the Double A level. In three seasons minor league ball Olivera had a 9-17 record with an ERA of 4.34 and 157 strikeouts (96 walks) in 230 innings pitched. He started 32 of his 76 games.
In 2007 he split time between the CAROLINA MUDCATS (AA) and the RENO ASTROS (IND). He also was a member of the national team at the European Championship in Barcelona, the Baseball World Cup and the Final Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
The addition of “Manny” Olivera reinforces the already strong pitching staff of BARCELONA and will help in their hunt for the Spanish championship and at the CEB Cup in Regensburg, where they will try to defend their title from 2008. The team sits at the top of the standings after last weekend’s game day in the Division de Honor with a 7-1 record.
