Mainz Athletics add James Tony Baker, Martin Matlacki

Posted on March 28, 2011 by philipp

The German Baseball-Bundesliga club Mainz Athletics has added two more players for the upcoming season. Outfielder Martin Matlacki is coming from the Saarlouis Hornets, shortstop James Tony Baker from Georgia. Mainz was impressed with the stats from Baker and hope that the 23-year-old will reinforce the team in 2011.

The 27-year-old Matlacki got some interest from other teams in Germany, but decided to join the A’s. In 2010 he batted .316/.377/.411 with nine doubles, 13 runs and 14 RBI in 26 games for the Hornets. Saarlouis decided during the offseason to withdraw from the first division due to financial reasons. Matlacki also is going to coach the Athletics team, which is playing in the 2nd Baseball-Bundesliga.
