The London Mets strengthened their place at the top of the National Baseball League standings on Sunday, May 2, cashing in on numerous rain-outs to move their record to 5-1 for the season. With games at Richmond, Herts and Croydon all falling foul of the weather, it was left to the Mets to put Southampton Mustangs to the sword in the only action of the day.

NBL Special Reporter Simon Fitzjohn provides the details:

The Mustangs, who entered the doubleheader with an encouraging 2-2 record for the season, were brushed aside by the Mets to the tune of 11-1 and 15-0.

Jason Roberts and Brian Andersen took wins on the mound as the Londoners pounded out double-digit hits in both games.

The Mets’ Carlos Diaz believes his side are just getting warmed up.

“It was hit after hit for us today,” Diaz said, “and we really needed that. We have not done well with the bats so far this season but that changed today. We are where we want to be as far as the standings are concerned, but we know we have to produce like this every weekend if we want to stay there.

“I think Southampton need to improve in a few areas,” Diaz added, “but for their first season they did pretty well. It is a good challenge for them to try and get better and I hope they do.”
