Lithuanian Championship Week 3: Three Clubs Perfect as Vilnius, Titans Sweep

Posted on May 8, 2021May 12, 2021 by Gabriel Fidler

A three-team logjam at the top of the table sets up a Week 4 that will see one undefeated team fall. The BK Vilnius received two more excellent starts from its pitchers on Saturday, with the team’s and league’s second shutout of the year in the nail-biting opener and a 12-2 thumping in the nightcap. The Titans of Utenai walked by the Vilnius Baseball Academy in the first of its two Sunday games before a close contest later that day. Meanwhile, Minsk did not contest either of its doubleheaders, leaving both Kaunas clubs without a game.

Maksim Burdin and Dalius Neliupsis both pitched excellent games in the opener, but the latter’s defence let him down, as four errors led to three unearned runs for Vilnius, which managed only seven hits and a walk. Evaldas Remeika had two of those hits to back up Burdin (1-0), who surrendered a mere four hits in seven shutout frames, punching out four. Neliupsis (1-2) took the loss despite giving up only one earned run in six innings.

Game Two was all Vilnius, as Gytis Morkunas (2-0) allowed only a pair of unearned runs and two free passes in five frames for the win. The hosts drew 12 walks to go alongside six hits and three more Tiranai errors, stealing five bases in a 12-2 win in five. Evaldas Zarkaitas was 2-for-2 with two walks and Remeika went 2-for-3 with a free pass as the home team moved to 4-0.

Vilnius Baseball Academy at Utenos Titanai (1-11, 8-11)
Eimantas Zickus took Game One for the Titans, which made the most of four walks, four miscues, and two hit batters by Vilnius by adding seven hits and three stolen bases. Zickus doubled, tripled, and walked in the three-hole and tossed five three-hit innings with seven Ks and no walks. The one run allowed was unearned and he improved to 2-0.

The nightcap was a much more exciting game, with the Academicians starting the scoring with two runs in the first, before Utena roared back with four in the bottom of the frame. Down 5-2 after three, Vilnius erupted for a five-run frame with some help from the hosts’ defence and pitching, ceding only one run back in the latter half. VBA could not score again until the seventh, by which time the Titans had added two- and three-run frames, holding on for an 11-8 win. Edvinas Jurgelenas had a single and double for the undefeated victors, while Justas Sadaunikas was 2-for-4.
