Lithuanian Championship Week 2: Beliauskas Leads Kauno Lituanica to Top of the Standings

Posted on May 2, 2021May 18, 2022 by Gabriel Fidler

Audrius Beliauskas used a pair of two-hit games to back up solid pitching from Norvydas Zukauskas and Andrius Stravinskas, Sr. and Kauno Lituanica moved to a perfect 4-0 at the top of the table. Meanwhile, in Utena, the second side of the 2020 champions blasted Kaunas’ additional squad to jump to the middle of the standings. For the second straight week, no team won on the road.

Vilnius Baseball Academy at Kauno Lituanica (1-5, 1-4)
The top team of the Kaunas baseball club maintained its perfect record with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, though the Vilnius Baseball Academy stayed in both games until the end. In Game One, the academicians took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Lukas Paskevicius singled home David Zaccheus, who had doubled. Lituanica responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame, capitalizing on a VBA error.

Runs in the second and fifth sealed the victory, with Zukauskas (2-0) tossing seven strong innings with nine strikeouts and only four hits and a single walk. Beliauskas and Donatas Maciulevicius each laced a double and a single.

Game Two saw Beliauskas ensure another quick start, with the leadoff hitter singling and scoring the first of two runs in the opening frame. After coming on to pitch, Zaccheus doubled and scored in the fifth, but Lituanica responded with another two-run frame in the bottom half to ice the win. Zaccheus surrendered only one hit in four relief frames, striking out three and walking three. Stravinskas (1-0) struck out five in a complete game effort (seven innings) and Beliauskas had his second two-hit game, swiping two bags as well.

Kauno SM Gaja-Lituanica at Utenos Taranai (1-10, 1-14)
Utena’s second team looked as strong as its first did in Week 1, blasting its Kaunas counterpart in two slugfests, the second ending in only five frames. In the opener, the hosts led 6-0 after two, adding its second four-run frame in the sixth for the 10-1 victory. The Taranai made the most of six errors and five walks from Gaja-Lituanica, and only Tomas Ramelis had two hits. Dalius Neliupsis (1-1) punched out nine in six frames for the victors, with four hits and a walk.

The rubber match was even more lopsided, with innings of three, one, three, and seven runs for Taranai. Kaunas broke out of its slump in a four-run fourth, but the 7-4 deficit quickly expanded with Utena’s final flourish.

Domantas Trinkunas (1-1) worked around six hits and an error through four, surrendering only one earned run and striking out three. He also went 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot, scoring three times. Neliupsis followed him in the order and also had a brace of one-base knocks. Ramelis walked twice and doubled, scoring three times. Paulius Lenkauskas was a perfect 3-for-3 for Gaja-Lituanica.
