The World Team rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to beat the US squad 7-5 in the Futures Game, which kicked off the Major League Baseball All-Star activities at Bush Stadium in St. Louis. The game was halted due to rain for nearly four hours after just a few minutes of play and also was limited to just seven innings because of the wet conditions. Alex Liddi of the Seattle Mariners played third and first base for the World Team, walked twice and scored a run in the opening frame. Juan Carlos Sulbaran of the Cincinnati Reds walked two batters in the seventh, but still was able to close it out for the save.
