Canadian right-handed pitcher Leon Boyd, who has a Dutch passport, announced on Monday that he has retired from his international career with the Netherlands. One of the heroes to win the 2011 Baseball World Cup with the Dutch team in Panama, the 30-year-old Vancouver native had played eight years with the Dutch National team.
In Europe Boyd pitched for the Hoboken Pioneers in Belgium, as well as DOOR Neptunus and Corendon Kinheim in the Netherlands. He participated in the 2008 Olympic Games and the 2009 and 2013 World Baseball Classic. After his heroics against the Dominican Republic in 2009 he received a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, but got released the following Spring Training after a so so season with the Double-A affiliate.
