Starting pitcher Josh Johnson, who just signed a four-year extension worth $39 million with the Florida Marlins, talked to MLB.com on Thursday about growing into the role of a leader on the team. The 26-year-old right-hander fulfilled his potential last season with a 15-5 record and an ERA of 3.23 in 33 starts.
Johnson and Ricky Nolasco are projected to be number one and two in the starting rotation with the other three spots up for grabs during Spring Training. Dutch right-hander Rick Van Den Hurk, who impressed during a stint in the Puerto Rican Winter League at the end of last year, is one of the candidates besides Anibal Sanchez, Chris Volstad, Sean West and Hayden Penn.
The new leader of the staff had some kind words about Van Den Hurk:
Last year, Johnson said he spoke out a little bit more, especially late in the season. Teammate Rick VandenHurk frequently sought Johnson’s advice.
“Vandy took a big step last year,” Johnson said. “I’d sit next to him, and we’d talk baseball the whole time. He’d sit by me and we’d just talk and talk, and he’d shoot things by me.
“He’d ask my opinion, and we’d learn things off each other. If we do that more as a team, it’s going to be huge in the long run.”
Pitchers and catchers of the Florida Marlins will report to spring training at the Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida on February 19.
