Japan crushes, no-hits Lithuania at WUBC

Posted on July 23, 2008 by philipp

Team USA was on the verge to lose against Canada, but came back to win the duel, when Jared Clark scored the game winner on a wild pitch in the eleventh period. They overcame a 0-3 deficit in the bottom of the eighth through an error and a two-run single by Christian Colon. The maple leafs had taken the lead on RBIs by Sammie Starr, Grant Kveder and Eric Cattoni. Andrew Oliver started for the USA and allowed one unearned run on one hit and five walks. He was opposed by Mat Wilson, who went eight innings, giving up six hits, three runs (1 ER) and three base on balls. Mike Leake picked up the win, Brandon Kaye took the loss.

In the morning on Tuesday Korea scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to win 4-3 against Taiwan. Sang Won Bak went two-for-three with two RBI. Joung Hoon Son hit a RBI triple. Chinese Taipei tried to come back, but only could cut the deficit to a run in the eighth through back-to-back RBI singles by Kuo-Min Lin and Min-Sih Chen. Hyun June Park struck out eight in 7 2/3 innings for the win. Chen-Chang Lee took the loss.

Even before the United States reached 4-0 in the night session, Japan used a 13-run third to crush Lithuania 25-0 in seven innings to stay undefeated at the World University Baseball Championship. Keijiro Mtsumoto went five-for-seven with five runs scored and nine RBI. Hiroki Uemoto scored also five times. Tsuyoshi Takashima and Mtsumoto each hit homeruns. But also their pitchers were brilliant. Only an error denied the perfect game bid. Shingo Tatsumi, Manasori Fujihara and Masahiro Inui combined on a no-hitter.
