At the beginning of the week, Palfinger Reggio Emilia announced that Jairo Marquez is going to be their new catcher in the 2013 season. He takes over for Simone Bosco behind the plate, who will take a sabbatical this year. The 24-year-old Venezuelan backstop played for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization from 2007 to 2011, batting .287/.359/.404 between Rookie and High-A ball. He just finished a stint in the Venezuelan winter leagues, where he split between the top division and the second-division Liga Paralela. Marquez is the second new player on the Reggio Emilia roster besides shortstop Erick Epifano.
