Jair Jurrjens solid in Loss, Shairon Martis gets crushed

Posted on April 28, 2009April 28, 2009 by philipp

Jair Jurrjens again pitched solid on Monday in the MLB, but got hit with his second loss of the season, as his Braves offense didn’t do enough against the Cardinals.  He allowed six hits, two runs and two walks in six innings, striking out two. He left the game, trailing 1-2. Both teams scored one frame later with St. Louis winning 3-2 in the end. Jurrjens threw 99 pitches, 58 for strikes. His ERA now stands at 1.72 for the season. The Cards did their damage against the right-hander early. Chris Duncan and Rick Ankiel plated runners with RBI singles in the first two periods. He settled in afterwards and gave his club a chance to win.

Shairon Martis also started, but not in a pitcher friendly place. Throwing at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia he allowed eight hits, seven runs and four bb in five-plus innings, striking out three. His Nationals offense provided him with seven runs support through six innings, but he couldn’t use it as advantage. The Phillies scored against him on a RBI single by Greg Dobbs and a double play groundball in the second, on a grand slam by Ryan Howard in the fifth and when an inherited runner scored against reliever Julian Tavarez in the sixth. Martis had left after putting the leadoff man on in the sixth. He threw 50 of his 89 pitches for strikes and also contributed in the slugfest with a RBI single in the second frame. Washington, which belted a total of five homeruns in the game, blew an 11-7 lead in the bottom of the eighth. Philadelphia scored six runs in the frame, highlighted by a grand slam by Raul Ibanez. The World Series champion won by a score of 13-11.
