First Icelandic Baseball Championships

Iceland held its first Baseball Championship in the past two weeks. The one and only baseball club in Iceland, the Reykjavik Trolls, put an advert in the paper to get any interested parties to participate and they ended up with two teams – both from their club! Because they are called the Reykjavik Trolls, they split the Trolls up into 2 teams – the Forest Trolls and the Stone Trolls with the first game set for July 28th in a best of 5 series. A total of 18 players showed up for that game and after the players were split into the two teams, the Forest Trolls won 6-1. Two days later they had another game, which the Forest Trolls won 3-0. The following week, on August 4th, a doubleheader was scheduled in which the Stone Trolls took both games 6-0 and 6-5. In the 5th and deciding game last Thursday, August 13th, the Forest Trolls overcame the Stone Trolls 8-5 after 10 innings. After the trophy and medal presentations everyone enjoyed hot dogs and drinks.

The “Trolls” are very happy now that they have played their first Championship in Iceland! “It´s a great feeling to have taken the next big step in making baseball more popular in Iceland”, said president Raj Bonifatius. The “Trolls” had a terrific turnout in their summer camps and now they are running the last two weeks of summer practice before they have to go back indoors.
