Hornets release Chris Sweeney

Posted on May 7, 2008 by philipp

The SAARLOUIS HORNETS have cut their ties with Chris Sweeney and released him at the beginning of this week for off-field conduct. They will replace him during the next couple of days. The club is talking to a few candidates and hopes to find a solution eventually until the upcoming weekend, when the HORNETS will travel to the HEIDEKOEPFE for the make-up of a washed-out doubleheader of opening day. We will inform you, as soon as an announcement will be made.

Sweeney was one of the best players of the club and in the Bundesliga, but had some problems off the field. He already was suspended for a week in mid-April, but was allowed to play the last couple of games. Due to his playing skills he is gathering interest among European clubs and could find another team during the next weeks.

He came to Germany last season and started strong with six hits, three homeruns, five runs and nine RBI in his first game in the Bundesliga. After two weeks he had a batting average of .867 with five homeruns and 18 RBI. Unfortunately his performance dropped in the following and Sweeney had more impact off than on the field. His team dropped in the standings and missed the playoffs in fifth place. He had a solid start into the new season and the club was hopeful that he would help them this year into the top four. But it went the wrong way and they had seen enough.
