Chinese Taipei and the Netherlands celebrated wins on Tuesday at the Honkbalweek Haarlem 2018. Chinese Taipei edged out Italy in extra innings in the afternoon at Pim Mulier Stadium. The Dutch team beat Cuba in the evening contest. Germany is taking on Chinese Taipei on Wednesday, while the Netherlands play against unbeaten Japan. The preliminary phase continues through Thursday.

Chinese Taipei scored two runs in the bottom of the tenth to beat Italy 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon in Haarlem. About 3,000 people in the stands at Pim Mulier Stadium followed a thrilling contest, which needed an extra inning to find a winner. A RBI single by Chien Ming Chiang in combination with an error by Italy helped Chinese Taipei to score the two decisive runs. Italy had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the frame on a sac fly by Alessandro Vaglio. Cheng Hao Wang picked up the win, Filippo Crepaldi got the loss.

The Netherlands improved to 3-1 in the Honkbalweek Haarlem on Tuesday evening with a 6-4 win over still winless Cuba. The Dutch team answered Cuba’s early run in the first with four runs in the second. When the record world champion closed the gap to 3-4 in the fourth, the team of Evert Jan’t Hoen add two more runs to keep them away. Dwayne Kemp and Stijn van der Meer collected two hits and two RBI apiece. Six different players scored for the Dutch. Mike Bolsenbroek got the start, allowing five hits, three runs and two walks in four innings. Lars Huijer picked up the win in relief. Robert Delgado and Lazaro Cedeno hit solo home runs for Cuba. Misael Villa conceded five hits and four runs in 1 1/3 innings to take the loss.
