AMS 000 000 000 0 9 2 NEP 011 010 00X 3 3 0
DOOR Neptunus has taken a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Holland Series after shutting out L&D Amsterdam 3-0 on Thursday evening in front of 951 people at the Family Stadium in Rotterdam. Single runs in the second, third and fifth frame provided the necessary run support for another strong performance by the Neptunus pitching staff.
Neptunus wasn’t exactly better, just more effective and able to hold the opposing offense scoreless, even though the Pirates out-hit them 7-1 in the first four and a half innings and 9-3 overall. Starter Kevin Heijstek (W) allowed eight hits through 6 1/3 innings, but no runs or any walks, striking out five for the win. Dushan Ruzic closed it out.
At the plate the team from Steve Janssen took the lead in the bottom of the second when Jeffrey Arends scored on a wild pitch. They doubled the score one frame later on a RBI single by Raily Legito. Benjamin Dille made it 3-0 in the fifth with a RBI double. They also might only had three hits, but were able to work eight walks, including four by Eugene Kingsale (one intentional).
Amsterdam on the other hand had runners on base in eight of the nine innings, but couldn’t manufacture any runs. They even wasted a one-out bases loaded situation in the second when Michael Kramer grounded into a double play.
Ben Grover (L) got the start for the Pirates and took the loss, issuing one hit, two runs and five walks in 2 1/3 innings. Frank van Heijst replaced him in the third and gave up two hits, a run and three bb in the remaining 5 2/3 frames. Game four of the series will be played back in Amsterdam on Saturday afternoon.
