In the last game of the Haarlemse Honkbalweek 2010 Cuba got a little payback for the 0-10 loss against the Netherlands on Tuesday, defeating the Dutch team 12-5 in the afternoon game. The team of head coach Jim Stoeckel still won the tournament for the third time after having won all seven games before.
Cuba came out swinging against David Bergman (4 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 3 SO), putting five runs on the board including two on a two-run double by Yunier Mendoza (2-5, 3 RBI). But the Netherlands came back. After exchanging zeros over the next four frames, the Dutch team initiated its own five-run rally capped by a two-run single of Rene Cremer in the top of the sixth and tied the game.
However Cuba wasn’t shocked for long and regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homerun by man of the match Alexei Bell (3-4, 3 runs). One frame later they made sure that the Netherlands didn’t come back for a second time and blew things wide open with six more runs.
Angel Pena (CUB) began for the Caribbean squad and issued four hits, three runs and a walk in five-plus innings. He struck out seven. Norberto Gonzalez (W) struck out five in four innings of four-hit relief for the win. After Bergman left after the fourth, Leon Boyd retired six of the eight batters he faced in two scoreless frames. Afterwards Nick Veltkamp (L) and Gregory Gustina struggled against the Cuban offense.
