Three fast runs and another strong outing for the pitching staff lifted the Netherlands to a 4-1 win over the USA on Monday evening in Haarlem. The Dutch team is now tied with Cuba at the top of the standings with a 3-0 record.
A RBI single by Sidney de Jong in the opening period put the home team in front of 1,500 at the Pim Mulier Stadium in front. One frame later a RBI single by Danny Rombley and a sac fly by Dwayne Kemp made it 3-0. The American squad avoided the shutout, when Marty Gantt drove in a run with a sac fly in the eighth. But in the bottom half of the frame the Netherlands regained their three-run lead thanks to a run by Eugene Kingsale after an error.
Meanwhile David Bergman (W) dominated at his home ballpark with six scoreless two-hit innings. He struck out seven and retired the last twelve batters in a row. Nick Veltkamp and Dave Draijer closed it out. Paul Davis (L) gave up seven hits, three runs (1 ER) and a walk in seven innings. The game started after a 1.5 hour rain delay.
