Posted on July 16, 2009 by philipp

The Italian Baseball League club MONTEPASCHI GROSSETO is going to retire the number of former catcher Craig Stimac in a ceremony before game two of this week’s series against T&A SAN MARINO on Friday evening. Stimac, who played in the MLB for the San Diego Padres in 1980 and 1981, came to Italy in 1984 and batted .400 (OBP .452/SLG .696) with 95 homeruns for GROSSETO and SAN MARINO in 322 games until 1989. In 1986 he led the ORIOLES to their first championship in the Serie A1. After his career ended he stayed in Italy and died this January at his home in San Marino the age of 54. His number 23 is the fourth, which will be retired by GROSSETO after Riccardo Luongo (24), Beppe Massellucci (44) and Richard Olson (48). Members of Stimac’s family and the 1986 championship team will be on hand for the ceremony.
