by press release, Little League International – Greece District 01
A baseball and softball pilot tournament of acquaintance for Athens was held at the softball field at the old American base in Vouliagmeni, the past two weeks.
At this first Hellenic Little League activity and at the five games that where organized, 48 children, boys and girls, along with the 10 volunteers that helped, came to their first playing contact with the exciting games of baseball and softball, Gloves, throws and pitches warmth the athletic passion and heated the hearts of friendship and noble competition for all ages for these, strange for the Greeks, sports.
And we were not wondered about the unknown of these games, because all the other team sports where once also not known once, basketball and volleyball from USA, handball from Scandinavia football from England etc. The thing that wondered us was the fulfillment of our souls in contradiction to the small time we gave to those games. That, magnetic feeling is not easily found in other sports, and with that magnetic motion, we all gave the rendezvous for meeting again, at 2009, to the championship series for each category.
From Hellenic Little League: Nikos Sklavounos, Nikos Krithis, Dimitris Gazis and Nikos Andoniadis. We also thank our pilot volunteers: Dimitris Menexis, Kiriako Kourtzoglou, Manolis Vandaris, Eleytheria Krithi, Ernest Southwood, Kostas Glifos, Tom Mazarakis and Matina Samioti.
We also thank the Ionikos Nikae team and the 12th Elementary school of Palaio Faliro for their presence. Special thanks to the Red Cross volunteers for the first aid they provided. The tournament sponsors “American University of Athens” and “Baseball Acropolis”.
