Six university teams took part in BSUK’s first-ever National University Softball Championships (NUSC) on Saturday, 19 October at the showcase diamonds at Farnham Park, with the University of Portsmouth taking the title in a one-run final over the University of Nottingham.
The tournament, delivered by BSUK, provided long-standing university teams and those that have formed over the past year or two with a chance to taste the competitive side of the sport, and the competition offered a glimpse of a longer-term plan for a sustainable university softball competition structure.
The following universities from around the country were represented: the University of Portsmouth (which entered two teams), Bucks New University, the University of East Anglia (UEA), the University of Brighton and the University of Nottingham.
The event managed to avoid the autumn rains and was played on two diamonds at the recently-opened dedicated facilities at Farnham Park in South Buckinghamshire. The six teams played a full round-robin, with the team in the top two places competing for the championship trophy.
The winning team was the University of Portsmouth’s UPSU Shafters Purple, who defeated the University of Nottingham Swingers by 13-12 in a tight final.
