Germany loses to Cuba, but raises expectations

Posted on November 8, 2007November 8, 2007 by philipp

The Cuban team won also their second game of the World Cup of Baseball. But Germany did a really good job and lost only by the score of 3-7 to the heavyweight in international baseball.

Cuba started strong and scored four runs in the top of the first through a RBI-single by Frederich CEPEDA and a three-run-homerun by Yoandri URGELLES. But the German squad fought right back. Left fielder Simon GUEHRING brought them on the board with a RBI-single. Catcher Kai GRONAUER followed with a two-run-shot to cut the deficit to one run. Three scoreless periods followed this eventful start. The Cuban team added two runs in the fifth through a RBI-single by Alex MAYETA and a RBI-triple by CEPEDA. URGELLES hit a RBI-triple in the seventh to build up a 7-3 advantage.

Vladimir BANOS (W 1-0) recovered from a bad start into the game and received the win. He allowed three runs on four hits in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out seven. Arley SANCHEZ relieved him and closed out the game.

Tim HENKENJOHANN (L 0-1), who is a former minor leaguer of the Minnesota Twins, pitched the complete game. He allowed seven runs on 14 hits and four walks, striking out five.
