Germany Defeats Czechia to Win U12 European Championship After Extra-Innings Drama

Posted on July 9, 2022July 10, 2022 by MrBB

Germany defeated Czechia in dramatic fashion to claim the gold medal at the 2022 U12 European Championship in Vienna, with a two-run double in the third extra-inning by Felipe Morales Weggemann leading to German celebrations in the infield.

The two teams, who also met in group play (Czechia won 16-3), were evenly matched in the contest. Czechia scored one run in the top of the sixth and final scheduled inning to force extra innings, with the teams then adding two runs apiece in the seventh. Czechia took a 9-8 lead in top of the ninth, which set the stage for Morales Weggemann’s heroics.

The lefty, in only his second plate appearance of the tournament, doubled, bringing home Liam Krohne and Samuel Gühring for a 10-9 (box score) final result.

In the bronze medal game, the Netherlands also needed extra innings to claim the W, with a nine-run seventh inning clearing the way for a 12-5 (box score) victory over Italy. Like Germany, the Netherlands were avenging a group-stage defeat.
