2013 World Baseball Classic, News - German National Teams Comments Off on Germany announces Roster for World Baseball Classic Qualifier

Press Release German Baseball and Softball Federation (DBV)

Roster Team Germany at World Baseball Classic Qualifier

The German Baseball and Softball Federation (DBV) today announced its roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic Qualifier, which will be played from September 20 to 24 at the Armin-Wolf-Arena in Regensburg, Germany. Manager Greg Frady finalized the selection of his team during the ongoing European Championship in the Netherlands.

The preliminary roster of 28 consists of 15 players, which are currently on the German team at the European Championship. Additionally there are reinforcements coming from professional leagues and the German Baseball-Bundesliga. Mike Larson (Mainz Athletics), Mike Bolsenbroek, Justin Kuehn and Matt Vance (all three Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg) are eligible to play due to their status as permanent residents.

The biggest names from the North American minor and independent leagues are left-handed pitcher Will Ohman, who appeared in a total of 483 Major League games, most recently for the Chicago White Sox in 2012, and middle infielder Toby Gardenhire, who reached Triple-A during his active career and is the son of Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. Donald Lutz of the Cincinnati Reds also is returning to the German national team. A total of 13 minor and independent leaguers are on the roster.

Manager Greg Frady is working with the German national team since 2004. He led the team to three consecutive IBAF Baseball World Cups and to a bronze medal at the 2010 European Championship during his tenure. During the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Regensburg, Frady is also getting help from Major League Baseball on his coaching staff. Justin Pope (New York Yankees), Gene Roof (Detroit Tigers) and Terry Abbott (Miami Marlins) will be serving as assistant coaches during the tournament.

World Baseball Classic Qualifiers will be played in Regensburg (Germany), Jupiter (Florida), Taipei City (Chinese Taipei) and Panama City (Panama). The four winners of these tournaments will advance to the main event of the World Baseball Classic, which will be held in March of 2013. Germany is facing Canada, Great Britain and the Czech Republic at the WBC Qualifier at the Armin-Wolf-Arena in Regensburg from September 20 to 24, 2012. Tickets are available through www.worldbaseballclassic.de.
