German Baseball Bundesliga Finals: Legionare just one win away from first title

Posted on September 24, 2007 by MrBB

Regensburg came back from 0-5 and won 6-5 on Sunday against Mainz. They are now up 2-0 in the best-of-five-series.
This game looked much more like a final, then the one on Saturday. The Athletics scored first and build a 5-0 lead until the middle of the fourth. Sascha LUTZ brought the A’s in front with an RBI-double in the third. Mike LARSON added a run with an RBI-groundout. Nils HARTKOPF, Ulli WERMUTH and Keigo MYIAGI reached the plate one frame later.
But the Legionäre came right back. They cut the lead to two in the bottom of the fourth. Ludwig GLASER slammed in two with a triple. Michael WEIGL followed with an RBI-single. They tied it in the fifth by a Simon KUDERNATSCH RBI-triple and a sacrifice fly of Beau MILNER.
After that there were only zeros on the scoreboard. Until the first extra-inning. There it was Kai HOPFENBERGER who reached base with one out, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt of GLASER and scored on WEIGL`s RBI-single.
Matt FLAHERTY started for the home team. He lasted only 3 1/3 innings and gave up five runs (2 ER) on nine hits. Twins Minor Leaguer Rodney GESSMANN pitched five three-hit-innings in relief and stopped the A`s Offense. Philipp HOFFSCHILD got the win.
Keigo MYIAGI again showed his rubber arm, but lost the game. He pitched 9 2/3 innings and allowed ten hits, six runs and four walks. He struck out seven.
Regensburg are now only one win away from their first German Baseball-Bundesliga title in team-history.

They resume play next weekend.
