Georg Apfelbaum is the new head coach of the German Baseball-Bundesliga club Cologne Cardinals. He succeeds Joe Slater, who was at the helm since 2010. Apfelbaum already led the Cards in 2007 and 2008, also the last two seasons, where they reached the playoffs.
Cologne was relegated following the 2010 season, but got right back up into first-division baseball in Germany. In 2012 they finished in sixth place in the final standings of the northern division. The club also announced that brothers Marcel and Pascal Raab most likely will leave the team.
Apfelbaum served as general manager of the Cardinals in 2012.
