French Division I Baseball Week 4

Posted on May 9, 2022May 13, 2022 by Gabriel Fidler

In the first of three ‘reserve weeks’, when previously postponed games are played, Metz was finally able to start its season, travelling to Montigny to take on the Cougars, who were tied for the Pool A lead. The Cometz were given a rude awakening by the hosts, as Yorfrank López struck out a Division I season-high 17 batters in a two-hit shutout in Game One, while Robinsón Maestre was aces in the nightcap.

Summary
The opener was all López, who induced a popup to start the game before striking out the next eight batters consecutively. After losing his perfect game on a single by Rodríguez, the Cougars’ ace permitted only one more hit and a trio of free passes the rest of the game. Meanwhile, a two-run single from Jaspe in the first, and another from Fagnoni in the fifth, were all that the López (2-0) needed. Each had two hits for the game.

The Cometz held a 2-0 lead when Montigny came to bat in the bottom of the fourth in Game Two, but the lead quickly evaporated as the hosts piled on eight runs, six of which were unearned. Fagnoni ripped a two-run double in the frame, coming home on a Jaspe single. Each once more had a brace of hits.

Maestre (2-1) retired 10 via strikeout in only five innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits and one walk. Trevor Rogers was excellent in relief for Metz, firing four shutout innings to end the game.
