French Division I Baseball Week 3

Posted on May 6, 2022May 13, 2022 by Gabriel Fidler

The Cougars de Montigny and the Rouen Huskies both swept weekend series to remain tied atop Pool A, while MUC Barracudas travelled to Nice, where hapless Cavigal were swept for the third-straight week. La Rochelle missed out on an opportunity to draw even with Sénart in Pool B after its series with Stade Toulousain was postponed.

Highlights
A six-run eighth secured an 8-1 win at Paris for Montigny, with doubles by Dylan Mayeux and Agustín Tissera in the inning. Robinsón Maestre (1-1) struck out nine in eight innings, surrendering only a single run. The nightcap went much more easily for the tourists, with Mayeux and Tissera both notching their second two-hit games of the doubleheader.

The Huskies used a four-run sixth to escape a Game One jam against visiting Savigny-sur-Orge. Javier Hernández had the big blow, a two-run double as part of his three RBIs on the day. Esteban Prioul (2-0) was solid, permitting only three hits and whiffing seven in six three-run frames.

The nightcap was similarly close, with Rouen breaking a 2-2 deadlock with a pair of markers in the eighth. Hernández smacked a pair of hits, while Maxime Lefevre was 3-for-4 with a walk. Yaeferson Gómez struck out eight in 6.2 solid frames (5H, 3BB, 8K), but it was Quentin Moulin (1-1) who slammed the door, tossing 2.1 scoreless for the Huskies.

Kevin Canelon turned in the best pitching performance of the weekend in Montpellier’s 8-1 drubbing of Nice, sending down 12 on strikes in 6.2 frames, allowing one run on five hits and no walks. Naoki Teramura did all he could for Cavigal, exiting after six with a 1-0 lead, having collected seven Ks and scattered four hits and four freebies. However, Luis Delogu mashed his first round-tripper of the year against Nice’s first reliever, scoring the first two batters of the inning, both of whom had walked.

Game Two was also close, with the Barracudas clinging to a 2-1 lead through seven, before plating two in the penultimate inning and five in the ninth. Ariel Soriano had three hits and two RBI for the victors, one of four players with at least two hits. Mathis Nayral (1-1) was solid, allowing only an unearned run on three hits in six frames. Valentin Blancjouvan (0-3) was the unlucky loser, tossing seven strong innings, with only two runs against and seven punchouts.
