Posted on October 15, 2023 by Gabriel Fidler

The penultimate day of the WBSC Youth Baseball5 World Cup confirmed the final positions from 5-12 with just the final between Cuba and France and the bronze medal game between Türkiye and Mexico still to play. At the end of Super Round play, China took fifth place, with Taiwan finishing sixth. The Placement Round was also completed with Ghana, Tunisia, Korea, Australia, Malaysia, and Zambia finishing in the positions seven to 12 respectively.

The first game was between the France and China. The Red Dragons took the first match, 4-1. Then, the No. 2 team in the world, France, had to work hard to win the remaining two contests. The second and third matches finished after close battles, both at 4-3, 4-3 for the Les Bleus.

The second game in the Super round of the day was a game between host nation Türkiye and Taiwan. This was the only game today in a Super Round that was over in two matches. Türkiye couldn’t find the form it had in previous days and lost to Taiwan, 6-2, 9-3.

The remainder of Day Five at the Youth Baseball5 World Cup offered an historic moment as Mexico took one match against Cuba. Mexico became the first team who were able to take a match from Cuba on the world stage. Mexicanos won the second match of its best-of-three set with its Caribbean neighbors in the second extra-inning 7-6, but ultimately had to admit the superiority of the Cubanos, 1-7, 7-6, and 1-3 for Cuba.

In the placement round, it was the last games of the tournament for teams Australia, Ghana, Malaysia, South Korea, Tunisia, and Zambia. As with two games in the morning session, there were a pair of games in the afternoon that went to three matches. Tunisia won over Aussies 1-11, 3-1, and 1-6. In an African matchup, Zambia beat Ghana 0-8, 8-5, and 2-6. The last match of Day Five finished with a score of 6-2, 3-4, 8-2 in favor of Korea over Malaysia.
