The Belgian Baseball Federation changed the playing format for the upcoming season. Eight teams will start in the elite league. They will play a double round robin over the first seven weekends with home and away games for every club. This is possible in Belgium due to the short distances between the cities. The best six teams advance to a second round.
Two double and one single round robin will follow. The first two from this round advance into the Belgian Series to determine the champion in a best-of-five series. Every club will play at least 39 games with the potential to stretch it to 44 if they reach the finals.
The seventh and eighth club after the preliminary round compete against the four best clubs from the second division to stay in the elite league. They will also play two double and one single round robin in the second round.
All games are set for Saturday and Sunday at 15:30. The complete schedule will be published in the near future. All Belgian competitions are slated to start on the first weekend in April.
It is an interesting and unique system. It maximizes the circumstances in Europe and should help Baseball in Belgium if it works out.
