Final Weekend of Regular Season in UK Baseball – the top teams battle

Posted on August 24, 2007August 24, 2007 by MrBB

The final weekend of the British Baseball League finds top-ranked and unbeaten Croydon (24-0) battling a tough London Mets (20-4) squad in South Division action. The Pirates swept a pair of games from last year’s national champions, the Richmond Flames (16-10), a week ago by identical 7-0 scores.

The Mets, who disposed of Richmond 9-4 and 6-1 two weeks ago, were idled last weekend and will enter the playoffs as the division second seed. The Flames will host the Bracknell Blazers (12-8) in the regular season finale for both teams.

The top two teams in the North Division will also do battle this weekend when the Liverpool Trojans (19-2) meet the Menwith Hill Patriots (16-4). The Trojans have clinched a playoff berth and need one victory to clinch the division title.

Menwith Hill is in a fight with the Manchester Eagles (14-5) for the league’s final playoff spot and slipped past Liverpool 2-1 last week. The Eagles will face the Manchester Eagles this coming Sunday afternoon in a must-win situation.

The Birmingham Maple Leafs (9-10) grabbed a couple of wins last week from the Sheffield Bladerunners (6-18), 13-3 and 6-4. The Maple Leafs will be looking to end the season on a win streak when they meet the Halton Jaguars (3-18) this weekend. The Jaguars dropped two games to Manchester last week.
