The Italian Baseball and Softball Federation (FIBS) is celebrating Yogi Berra’s 90th birthday. Giuseppe Fontana will be on site today at Yogi Berra Museum in Little Falls, New Jersey to hand the legendary catcher of the New York Yankees a Team Italy jersey with his number 8 and naming him honorary citizen of Cuggiono.
Fontana is the Deputy for Sport of the Mayor of Cuggiono. Cuggiono is the city where Yogi Berra’s father Pietro lived before emigrating to the United States. It’s a small town near Milan, which Yogi Berra visited in 1959.
FIBS is currently working on a project together with the Municipality of Cuggiono that links the development of Little League Baseball in the area to studies on roots of the game. FIBS Media Officer Riccardo Schiroli will be in Cuggiono to host an event today that celebrates Yogi Berra and other Italian American Baseball heroes and their links to the country of their ancestors.
