In the first of four exhibition games between the two teams Spain downed Italy 7-6 in spectacular fashion on Sunday evening in Sant Boi, Spain. Italy was leading 6-4 with two outs in the ninth inning. Back-to-back home runs by Engel Beltre and Javier Monzon then turned the score around with Spain walking off with the victory.
Beltre hit two home runs and drove in three overall. Lesther Galvan had three hits. Sebastiano Poma, Federico Celli and Beau Maggi went deep for Italy. Both teams used six pitchers apiece in the game in preparation for the European Championship, which starts on Saturday in Bonn and Solingen, Germany.
