Russia – Belgium 4-0
Russia shut out Belgium 4-0 on the third day of the European U18 Championship in Prague. Vladislav Govaradlo struck out 14 batters in nine scoreless three-hit, one-walk innings to lead Russia to the victory. At the plate Ivan Shirokiy and Nikita Tkachenkok combined for six hits, two doubles, three runs and two RBI. Kevin Desmedt took the loss, conceding eight hits, four runs (2 ER) and two base on balls in seven innings. He struck out seven.
Netherlands – Germany 11-1 (7)
The Netherlands eliminated Germany from contention at the European U18 Championship with an 11-1 blowout in seven innings. The Dutch put seven runs on the board in the first three frames en route to the lopsided victory. Tim Schaareman and Max Draijer had three RBI each. Kai Timmermans threw five scoreless three-hit innings for the win. Wolfgang Reitter, who already had pitched in relief on Monday, gave up five hits, five runs (3 ER) and a walk in one-plus innings to take the loss.
Spain – Ukraine 9-2
Spain reached the semi-finals with their third win this weekend, defeating the Ukraine 9-2. Four runs in the eighth blew the score wide open. Otherwise the Ukraine kept it fairly close. Vicente Velazquez, Ramon Varela and Ivan Alba had two RBI apiece to spark the offense. Eric Izquierdo gave up two hits, a run and two walks in 3 1/3 relief innings to pick up his second win this week. Vitalii Chukhrii got charged with the loss.
Czech Republic – Italy 7-4
In the evening game the Czech Republic stunned Italy with a 7-4 win. The Czech squad, which later this summer will participate also in the XXVII 18U Baseball World Cup in Taichung scored five runs in the first two innings to get an early and commanding lead. Jakub Ondracek and David Vohanka scored twice. On the mound Josef Cihlar got the win with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, striking out five. Matteo Spada impressed out of the bullpen for Italy, striking out eight in four one-hit innings. Marten Gasparini singled, walked and stole a base.
